CA High School Coach Pleads Guilty to Sexual Crimes Involving Minors

Sexual Crimes Against Minors

In this article, our California child sexual assault lawyer at Beck Law P.C., will be discussing the sexual crimes case of a former high school coach in California who has pleaded guilty to secretly photographing girls in the locker room. This coach, David Arthur Riden, was reportedly able to gain access to the girls’ locker room because he was working at Los Osos High School at the time. We will briefly discuss the charges against him and the punishment for his actions.

Sexual Crimes – A Summary of the Case

David Arthur Riden installed a hidden camera in the girls’ locker room at the Los Osos High School, capturing footage of at least 20 girls. The victims were all underage at the time of the filming.

Riden’s crimes were discovered after another member of staff found the hidden camera and alerted school officials. The school immediately launched an investigation and notified the police, leading to Riden’s arrest for sexual crimes.

Following his arrest, the police discovered more than 600 photos and videos of various victims in the locker room on his devices. The coach soon pleaded guilty to his crimes, including several counts of possession of child pornography, using a minor to produce explicit material, secretly photographing a minor, and other charges. He was slapped with nine years in prison and will be required to register as a sex offender.

While several other charges were dropped because he agreed to a plea deal, this case serves as a reminder of the strict punishment meted out to individuals who commit such sexual crimes involving minors.

This case also serves as a reminder of the need for vigilance and caution when protecting young individuals’ privacy and safety, especially in schools and other environments where they may be vulnerable.

How These Types of Crimes Can Be Avoided in the Future

It is deeply disturbing to hear about instances of abuse, particularly when it involves someone in a position of trust, such as a coach. Unfortunately, there is no surefire way to prevent this type of abuse from occurring, but there are steps that can be taken to reduce the likelihood of it happening.

First and foremost, it is essential for parents and caregivers to talk to their children about boundaries and personal safety. Children should be taught to speak up if they feel uncomfortable or if someone is crossing their boundaries. It is also crucial for parents to listen to their children and take any concerns they have seriously.

Additionally, schools and other organizations working with children should have clear policies to prevent and address abuse. This may include background checks for employees and volunteers, as well as regular training on how to recognize and report suspected abuse.

If you suspect (or have been notified) that a child is being abused, it is essential to report these sexual crimes to the authorities immediately. Do not try to handle the situation on your own, as it can be dangerous to do so.

Finally, you need to speak to a California child sexual abuse attorney at Beck Law P.C.  By talking to us, you can help protect the child and prevent the abuser from harming others.
