Two child Sex Assault victims
The charges in this case result from the sexual abuse of two children. According to the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office, Kumar committed “substantial sexual conduct” on both victims. The victims were ages 4 and 9 at the time the abuse started. The DA said the investigation found that Kumar was in a position of trust, which enabled him to begin his sexual abuse. He also used physical abuse to control the children and to make them fearful of revealing the abuse to others.
Abusers Often Use Threats to Keep Child Sex Assault Victims Quiet
Some child sexual abusers use force or the threat of violence to keep their victims quiet. Children are especially susceptible to adults who are older and in control. The perpetrator may threaten the child or might threaten to harm the child’s family members if they tell anyone of the abuse. As a result, the child sex assault abuser has control over the child and prevents him or her from telling anyone. In many instances, the abuser grooms the child in preparation for abuse before it begins.
What is Grooming?
Grooming is a tool that some child sexual abusers may use to assist them in gaining access to children. The abuser may employ techniques to help gain the trust of a child. As they develop trust, the child will learn to keep secrets between themselves and the perpetrator. As grooming advances, the child sex assault abuser may start hugging and touching in order to desensitize the child for later abuse. The abuser tries to normalize the abuse and make it seem as though nothing is wrong with the behavior. At the same time, the abuser takes advantage of trust to prevent the child from telling anyone.
Warning Signs of Child Sexual Abuse
It can be difficult for parents and others to notice the signs of sexual abuse in a child. A child may be hiding their situation because they are ashamed, are scared, or are simply unaware of the problem with the behavior. A child sex assault victim may experience a change in personality. They could become more withdrawn and may be more emotional. The child might exhibit signs of anger. A child may regress in their emotional growth and might experience stress, have difficulty sleeping, or might wet the bed.
